Scugog seeks help in crushing Uxbridge
SCUGOG -- Scugog's elected leaders are turning to their community for support in their bid to defeat rival Uxbridge in the upcoming North Durham Charity Poker Walk. The joint fundraising effort between the Scugog and Uxbridge Rotary clubs on June 25 will be in support of numerous charitable causes in north Durham, including Precious Minds, the Uxbridge Youth Centre, G-Moms of Port Perry, Scugog resident Christy Luke, Africycle, the Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Shelter and the Rotary clubs. Adding a twist to the fundraiser, however, will be a council challenge, pitting the councillors from each municipality against each other. The township that raises the most money will get to watch their rival councillors parade around Uxbridge in their town's hockey jersey on the day of the walk. Scugog Ward 4 Councillor Wilma Wotten is hoping to see Uxbridge Mayor Gerri-Lynn O'Connor march around in a Port Perry MoJacks sweater. "We are hoping the community rallies behind us," said Coun. Wotten. The event will feature two routes for the walk depending on the participant's level of mobility. The longer route will pass through Uxbridge's Countryside Preserve Trail, while the other accessible trail for those with strollers and wheelchairs will lead through the Wooden Sticks Trail. Both routes will begin and end at the Rotary Club bandshell in Elgin Park. Five stations will be set up along both routes where participants will draw a card from a deck and prizes will be awarded to the four-person team with the highest, lowest and other best-suited poker hand. Registration and warm-up will take place at 9 a.m. at the bandshell in Elgin Park, with the walk scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to noon. A barbecue lunch will follow for all participants. More details on the walk, on how to register, choose a charity and receive a tax receipt will be available on both Rotary club websites at www.uxbridgerotary.com and www.rotaryclubofportperry.com . To support Scugog's bid in its battle against Uxbridge, call the Township office at 905-985-7346 to make a pledge.

Pirates plunder Port Perry - Belleville Intelligencer - Ontario, CA
The Picton Pirates survived a stalled-out Zamboni and got three goals from Mitch Rosborough in an 8-2 romp over the Port Perry Mojacks in Game 5 of their OHA Jr. C Schmalz Cup playoff series Thursday night at the Prince Edward Community Centre.
The victory moves Pirates into the provincial semi-finals for the first time in franchise history as Picton eliminates Port Perry 4-1 in the best-of-seven quarterfinal.
"The MVPs were the guys who fixed the Zamboni because we were up 4-1 at the time and there was talk coming from the Port Perry side that they might want to finish the game on another night," said Pirates GM Jason Parks. "Kudos to those guys for fixing it so we could finish the game."
Pirates extended their lead to 7-1 after 40 minutes and the rout was on.
Along with Rosborough's hat trick, Pirates got a pair of goals from Brandon Peever and singles from Pat Millington, Jeff Kingdon and Dylan Leduc.
Dylan Mountenay (3), netminder Matt Kaludis (2), Peever (2), Rosborough (2), Denver Greer, Ryan Vader, Tyler Kearns, Jack Davison, Ryan Sizer and Nic Shunock picked up assists.
Kaludis made 37 saves for the win; Drew Siydock made 38 stops for Port Perry in the loss.
Brad Massia and Matt Murray scored for Port Perry, the Central Ontario Jr. C league champions.
"You don't expect to win 8-2 in a series-clinching game but Port Perry had some tired legs and we really used our depth," said Parks. "We got a big effort from Rosborough. He's normally a pretty even-keeled kid and that's the most excited I've seen him.
"We got through injury-free and now it's onward and upward."
Picton now awaits an opponent from one of the other Schmalz Cup quarterfinal series. Other teams remaining in the hunt for provincial bragging rights are the Alliston Hornets, Walkerton Hawks, Grimsby Peach Kings, Norwich Merchants, Wheatley Sharks and Belle River Canadiens.
Picton's only previous trip to the Schmalz Cup provincial playdowns was in 1999 when they were swept 4-0 in the quarterfinal round by the eventual Ontario champion Lakefield Chiefs.
