Modern wood stoves look like Grandma's, a dream to use

We do all our cooking on a wood cook stove or an outdoor charcoal cooker.

The first apartment I lived in had a natural gas range. I didn't particularly like it. I worried all the time about the pilot light turning off and I was very nervous about re-lighting it.

Most of my kitchen ranges have been electric. Some of them were straightforward stoves; some had self-cleaning ovens and all kinds of features and dials.

I always longed for a wood cook stove. I didn't want one to replace my electric range. I just liked the way they looked. It would be an ornament, so to speak.

When we first moved here, there was a stove in the house - a little wood cook stove. Be careful what you wish for!

We traded the little stove for a bigger, older, Enterprise stove, the kind Grandma had. It was lovely to look at but I quickly learned why women longed for a gas or electric range. The fire always needed feeding and it was very dirty to clean. Plus my kitchen always seemed to have fine ashes floating around.

It was a nuisance to light, so Jerry installed a propane cooktop.

With the cook top, I could quickly make coffee or supper without the trouble of trying to get the wood stove up to speed.

Even though the cooktop was fast and easy to use, I wasn't happy with it. It locked me into the way I could set my kitchen and I found it dirty. We were in construction mode and the jets very likely got plugged.

I knew that if we bought a new propane range, I would never bother using the wood stove. I had learned how to handle the Enterprise fairly well. I still loved the way old wood cookstoves looked and couldn't imagine my kitchen without one.

We decided to do a little research on the modern wood cookstove. This investigation led to us removing the propane and purchasing a lovely new stove that looks exactly like the one Grandma cooked on.

My stove is much more airtight so it doesn't burn wood at such a rapid rate. It has a summer grate system which lifts the fire up for a fast quick burn instead of a long heat. This means the stove can be set just for cooking, instead of heating and cooking, although I have to say, we have never used this feature.

The stove has a series of dampers to control the temperature and the grates are a snap to adjust. It is also a breeze to clean. I would rather clean my stove than an electric range. I always had such a problem getting the rings and burner pans sparkling clean.
