The fruits of unity

Cheering, amid thank you, wide-eyed stares, tears of joy accompanied by clapping and screaming from the people of Naisaumua Village in Tailevu, lingered the longest on June 11, when fundraising committee members said they needed to collect $12,000 within five hours.

From 10am to 4pm, the new record was seen as a good omen to the younger generation who now lead the Naivakalau tribe with contemporary leadership skills, replacing the older generation who were reared out of traditional, hot-blooded bureaucratic leadership.

The success of the occasion was described by village head honcho, Amani Qio as "unity among the people".

Among them were guests travelling from as far as Somosomo Village in Gau Island ù whose presence marked the strengthening of blood ties.

"Fijians and their communal system of living had been blamed for the downfall of many things in life," Mr Qio said. "But our strength is found within these gathering of clans," he said.

"It is the reason we are able to raise such a big amount within a short period of time. Capitalism is something we still struggle with today because it is not who we are," he said.

"We will gain if we put our heads together, listen to one another and learn to work together," he said. However, contradicting thoughts spoken out loud by former military reserve personnel and staunch village preacher Emosi Tabuavou maintained a stand on personal commitments as his priority.

He said rural dwellers lived by the spur of moment and devoted most of their valuable time for communal commitments rather than being consistent and productive for their own personal lives.

While the bula outfits seem to indicate good fortune and happiness, he pointed out that problems remained at home.

"They lack time management and the over-consumption of kava is the source of their downfall," Mr Tabuavou said.

Being the only farmer with hundreds of yaqona plants in his plantation, he was the sole supplier of yaqona consumed freely on that day at his stall from morning until 12 midnight.
