Gary Snyder talks writing, influences, Reed College and Portland

&Nbsp;Gary Snyder was interviewed in a classroom at the Vollum College Center on June 10, immediately after he participated in a symposium on Lloyd Reynolds. Snyder was affable and self-deprecating, often punctuating his answers with laughter. At the end of the interview, he posed for pictures before returning to his son's house in Westmoreland. While passing the pond at Westmoreland Park, Snyder identified a species of geese as being native to China and "quite sure of themselves."

Q: What is it about Lloyd Reynolds?

A: Lloyd is a figure that won't go away. (laughs) The three-hour seminar was quite wonderful and very instructive. I learned a lot of things I didn't know about him. When you're young you don't pay attention. You don't learn things about your teachers, or I didn't. (laughs) The effect of Lloyd on this college and on Oregon in general and on the world of the Roman alphabet calligraphy which extends to England and to some extent to France and Germany and probably also to Italy is quite remarkable. Interestingly, and this is the interesting part, there's always been a certain resistance at least from part of the Reed faculty to acknowledge calligraphy as a serious discipline ... Whereas in the 2,500 years of Chinese literary culture, calligraphy has been declared and regarded as foremost of the fine arts, always. Ahead of painting, ahead of writing. Calligraphy is No. 1 through all these centuries. And that's true today as well. (laughs) So there you go. Two dramatically different cultural outlooks.

Q: When you say he won't go away ....

A: It's because so many people admire him. His students come back, old gray-haired people like myself to the youngsters. There's a bunch of them that are really aficionados of Lloyd and are still trying to learn how to do that kind of calligraphy.

Q: His history seems so tied in with the history and culture of Reed.

A: Well, he taught right up until 1978. He was originally hired on at Reed as a literature teacher. This is one of the interesting things -- he was also a graphic artist and had done sketches and wood blocks, all of which you'll see over in the Cooley Gallery. He gradually ended up becoming ... part of it was the students asked for him. He was a teacher of literature and a teacher of calligraphy and also of typography of various kinds. He ended up more and more as the graphic artist and calligrapher.
