67 percent of Class of '11 headed to college

MACHIPONGO -- Post secondary plans for the Northampton High School Class of 2011 provided to the Northampton County Board of Supervisors Tuesday show over two- thirds of the class pursuing a college education.

Rick Bowmaster, superintendent of North-ampton County Public School, reported 104 students graduated on June 11.

The largest percentage of post secondary plans for the graduates was to go on to attend two or four-year colleges, with 67 percent of those graduating with these plans.

These graduates have been accepted at 35 colleges and universities with many in Virginia including the College of William and Mary, University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech, among others.

Other post secondary plans for the Class of 2011 included trade and technical schools, the military, and the work field with some still undecided.

Bowmaster is retiring June 30, and Willie Randall, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, offered the board's gratitude for his service at Bowmaster's last official meeting before the board.

"We want to thank you personally for your service to the county," said Randall, thanking him for his hard work and dedication and offering best wishes for future endeavors. "You have just been a true asset to this county.
