Downpours spawn fungus fest

Your yard has most likely turned into a virtual playground for fungus. This spring's nonstop rain has made trees, shrubs, lawns and garden plants more susceptible to disease.

"A number of leaf diseases tend to be more common and severe when we have a cool, wet spring," said Nancy Taylor, director of the C.Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic at Ohio State University.

And there is little you can do about it.

"For many leaf diseases, the infections have already happened," Taylor said. "We just have to wait for the symptoms."

In the next few weeks, symptoms of several fungal diseases might show up on landscape and garden plants.

Anthracnose leaf blight causes discoloration and damage to the foliage of trees and shrubs. Brown spots might develop, particularly along leaf veins, but, in most cases, anthracnose won't cause any long-term harm to the tree, even without treatment. In rare cases, particularly on sycamore and dogwood trees, anthracnose might cause more serious problems if the fungus moves into the stem tissue.

Septoria is a fungal disease that causes black or brown spots to appear on the leaves and stems of vegetables and grains. In tomatoes, it can cause defoliation when warm weather arrives.

The best remedy is to pull the infected plant, Taylor said. "In my experience, even the most diligent home gardener isn't very effective at controlling it" with sprays.

Botrytis, or gray mold, is likely to strike the flower garden. Symptoms include leaf spots, flower blight and bud rot, and patches of fluffy gray-brown mold. In extreme cases, the plant will die.

The best remedy is prevention, Taylor said. When the weather is dry enough to plant flowers, "make sure the plants are well-spaced to encourage air circulation and drying of the lower foliage, to minimize the impact of disease," Taylor said.

Then there is root rot. It's a stealthy disease. Plants become infected but seem perfectly fine until the weather gets hot and dry. Then, they die.

"You may not see a plant succumbing to root rot while it's cool and moist," Taylor said. "They tend to collapse later in the growing season when the weather becomes hot and dry and the root is not functioning."

Root rot-related pathogens "love soil saturation," she said. "Where drainage is good, they may not cause problems, but where drainage is bad and the plant root is standing in water for extended periods," they flourish.
