Want Perry to run? This guy has a website for you

You need to get comfortable with the notion that there are Americans who believe our nation's future depends on Gov. Rick Perry becoming President Rick Perry.

California state Assemblyman Dan Logue is one of those Americans. After an April meeting in Austin with Perry, he launched the draftperry2012.com website.

"America needs Rick Perry — Encourage him to run," says the website, which allows folks to call 209-840-6002 to leave a message urging Perry to run.

"Hello," the friendly recorded voice at that number says, "thanks for calling draft (then there is kind of a pause) Rick Perry 2012. Please leave a message and we will forward it to Governor Perry encouraging him to run."

I guess it also would be OK to leave a message encouraging him not to run, though those messages might not get forwarded to Perry.

Logue, who represents a Northern California district, opens his draft pitch on the website with a Biblical reference: "Where there is no vision, the people perish."

The bottom line comes a few paragraphs later: "I believe that in his service as governor of Texas, Rick Perry has demonstrated that he has the leadership and the vision for restoring our nation's economy and making American great again."

Logue offered a similar message when I spoke with him, recounting how impressed he and several California colleagues were when they met with Perry to discuss Texas' success in job creation.

"I walked away from there believing this guy has the potential to be another Ronald Reagan for our nation," Logue told me. "I want him to do for our country what he has done for Texas."

Some of you are laughing here. You must stifle that urge and accept such comments as compliments. Regardless of what you think about what Perry has done for (or to) Texas, the fact is there are many states that would be glad to trade economic places with us.

Logue said he had been "kind of leaning toward (Mike) Huckabee" for 2012, but now is a Perry guy.

"If we get him in the White House, instead of taking jobs from California to Texas he will go to China and India and bring them back from there," Logue said.

This is another reason I want Perry to run for president. I want to go on those trips when he brings those jobs back from China and India.

So far, Logue said, the feedback for the Draft Perry movement has been "amazing," something like 1,000 phone messages.

"I've been in the political arena my whole life. The Perry draft movement has the exact same excitement and momentum that happened when Ronald Reagan ran for president," he said. "I'm hearing from blue-collar Democrats who are saying this guy can put us back to work. This is what we need. This is what America longs for.
