VA opens same-day surgery unit downtown
The Department of Veterans Affairs opened a same-day surgery center today in downtown New Orleans. The new Ambulatory Procedure Unit will allow the VA to use its own facility for minor surgeries instead of sending veterans to other hospitals in the area.
The newest addition to the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System, at 2237 Poydras St., will cut down on the amount of time and patient coordination the VA must handle in order to provide care, said SLVHCS Acting Director Jimmy Murphy.
“Having the ability to again offer these services from VA doctors in VA facilities will significantly improve the continuity and quality of our services and can ensure that all procedures and medications are entered into the veteran’s permanent medical record in an efficient and timely manner,” Murphy said. “This is also the most cost effective way to deliver this care.”
The APU has three operating rooms, two invasive procedure units, two standard procedure rooms and one recovery room with six beds. The unit will offer surgical procedures that can be performed in under 90 minutes, require no blood transfusions and less than a 24-hour stay.
According to a statement from the VA, there will be approximately 110 employees working at the site, including laboratory, surgery, pharmacy, housekeeping and police personnel.
