Fil-Am comic Jo Koy apologizes for gay slur

FILIPINO-American actor and comedian Jo Koy apologized to his fans, the gay community and others who may have been offended after making a gay slur at an audience member earlier this week.

Koy, performing at the TBS Just for Laughs comedy festival at the Vic Theatre in Chicago on Wednesday, allegedly used the F word followed by the gay slur when he accused an audience member of looking at his crotch during the performance, according to the Windy City Times.

“I sincerely apologize for the incredibly foul word I chose to use on stage last night in Chicago,” tweeted Koy.

According to the Windy City Times, during Koy’s stand up routine, he danced in a feminine fashion and said, “I made this dance extra gay since I am not gay.”

He then later, opened the zipper of his jeans and pointed to his crotch to the screams of several female fans in the front row until one male voice yelled, “I saw it,” referring to his private part.

Koy then replied, “What are you looking at, (expletive)?”

“It was a moment that I regret,” said Koy in a statement. “I realize that words can be hurtful, which is never my intent. I’m truly saddened if I offended anyone with my poor choice of words, particularly the gay community. Homophobia is not funny.”

Koy becomes the latest comedian coming under fire for using gay jokes in their stand up routine. Koy’s apology comes at the heels of 30 Rock star and comedian Tracy Morgan’s apology to the gay community after he caught a lot of heat earlier this month for making gay jokes during his comedy performance in Nashville, Tennessee.

“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay and lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others,” Morgan said in a statement last week.

“While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”

Koy is seen weekly on E! Network’s Chelsea Lately and has several developmental deals with major television networks.

Since the story broke, some people following the story believe Koy’s career may take a hit after this set back.

“Jo used a word that he is not allowed to use and threw fuel on the fire,” wrote Victor Cypert in Koy’s Facebook page.

But many of Koy’s fans, several which attended the performance in Chicago, offered their support to the Filipino comedian through his Facebook page.

Does Mitt Romney really want to joke about being “unemployed”?

To be fair, there’s at least a kernel of truth to it. Mitt Romney hasn’t worked a day in over five years — he can afford to kick back for a half-decade without breaking a sweat — but if memory serves, Romney had a job. During his brief tenure, he struggled with his duties, received poor performance evaluations, and his employers were ultimately relieved to see him quit.

Maybe Romney should mention this at his next diner stop.

Unfortunately, most of the stories about politicians here lack context or follow-up. So, Mitt made a comment to a bunch of unemployed people at a gathering and then what...? Did someone challenge him? Ask how he managed to "survive" on no job and no income, or unemployment? Without context or follow-up, these stories do nothing other than getting us readers to comment on our own suppositions. Either follow-up or don't bother.

This. This, on so many levels, this.

Hopefully the folks in the room - presumably mainly Republicans - now wouldn't give him the time of day. And the R's say Obama doesn't seem to care about the unemployed?

The hard part is deciding which approach to use. Humor about hardship? Or so rich and out of touch he can take 5 years off work? Or that his "business credentials" include laying off people like you? Or that Mitt is unemployed because he was fired from his last job by voters who didn't like his work?
