Police car totaled in Village of Hamburg

The Village of Hamburg Police Officer Matthew H. Cullen suffered minor injuries following an accident that totaled the department’s patrol car on Saturday, June 4.

The accident occurred around midnight, when Cullen was pursing a lime green “crotch rocket” motorcycle that was traveling at a high speed down Lake Street in the village.

Due to increasing high speeds, Cullen decided to end the pursuit and reached down to turn off the emergency lights and siren.

At that time, the patrol vehicle bumped the roadside curb, causing the Cullen to lose control of the vehicle, spinning it across Lake Street and striking a utility pole on the opposite side of the street.

According to police, Cullen suffered a head injury along with various other bumps and bruises. He was treated and released from the Erie County Medical Center.

The investigation is continuing into the accident and police are working to identify the operator of the motorcycle.

At the time of the incident, the motorcycle was operated by a male wearing a light colored T-shirt, jeans and a full face helmet. There was a female passenger who was wearing a jean type of shorts, darker shirt and jacket.

The motorcycle operator was observed passing vehicles by driving into oncoming lanes of traffic, as well as passing through at least two red lights at an extremely high rate of speed.

Assisting the Village of Hamburg Police are the Town of Hamburg Police and the Erie County Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Unit.

On Friday, May 13, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, along with the Town of Hamburg Police Department’s Narcotics Unit and patrol units from both agencies executed an Erie County Search Warrant for an apartment at Lake Heights Drive in the Town of Hamburg.

The officers had to make a forced entry through the front door of the apartment at about 5:18 p.m. and took four white males and an adult pit bull into custody.

Taken into custody were Andrew T. Erdley, 19, of Lake View; Charles A. Lambert, J., 24, of Hamburg; Sean Burgess, 19, of Hamburg and Brandon M. Finch, 24, of Hamburg.
