Resale shops blossom as Earth- and wallet-friendly clothing option

Shop talk

Resale shop: Most often used to describe stores that buy their merchandise outright from individual owners. A consignment or thrift shop can also be called a resale shop, but there are differences.

Thrift shop: Is run by a not-for-profit organization to raise money to fund charitable causes. These range from the large Salvation Army and Goodwill chains to individual school, church or hospital thrift shops. Not-for-profits can obtain goods through donations, or they could operate on a consignment basis. Some do both.

Consignment shop: Accepts merchandise on a consignment basis, paying the owners of the merchandise a percentage when, and if, the items are sold. The majority of such shops pay the owners from 40 percent to 60 percent of the selling price and have a policy of displaying goods for anywhere from 30 to 90 days, although there is a wide range of policies across the country. Some consignment shops also purchase a variety of items outright from individual owners and/or wholesalers.

No fewer than 10 have opened or relocated in the metro Charleston market in the past 18 months, giving the area more than 30 resale stores of clothing, furnishings and accessories.

With clever names such as Next to New, Worn and New Beginning, the fresh batch of consignment shops joins the ranks of longtime mainstays in Charleston such as Consigning Women, Victoria's Furniture Consignments and Low Country Consignments.

The economy plays a huge role in the expansion of used clothes lines, but the green movement is shifting to the clothes rack as well.

'This is a recession-proof industry,' said Adele Meyer, executive director of the Michigan-based National Association of Resale and Thrift Stores. 'More stores are opening, and they have additional locations. People like to save money, and recycling also plays into it.'

The number of resale stores has stitched up 7 percent growth for the past two years, a rate that's expected to continue, Meyer said. There are more than 30,000 resale, consignment and thrift shops in the United States.

Net sales at resale shops increased 12.7 percent from 2008 to 2009 at a time when retail sales overall dropped 7.3 percent, according to NARTS and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Resale is a multibillion-dollar industry. Goodwill Industries alone generated $2.8 billion in retail sales from their 2,324 not-for-profit thrift stores across the U.S. in 2009, according to NARTS.

Secondhand, second rate?

A big part of what makes the market interaction so interesting is that many of these items are consumer "throwaways" – items that have been passed down from generation-to-generation, or, items that have been discontinued or found in thrift shops.

Some bigger-name thrift stores have, over time, become less and less of a place to find an actual good deal. (A dress that originally sold at Target for 20 bucks...and you want $12 for it? A hideous '80s prom dress for $34.99? Dream on.) Value World, on the other hand, continues to have good prices on clothes, shoes, books and housewares. Also, the selection tends to be better (read: less picked-over by hipsters) than some of the local Goodwill and Salvation Army stores. Our specific finds have included: a leather Prada skirt for $7, several pairs of nearly new Cole Haans and some Chanel flats ($5).
