Bellingham teen riding toward his goal of a pro motocross career
First ride: Jackson's brother received a motorcycle as a birthday present and Jackson immediately saw the fun in that, he said. He got a bike of his own and started racing shortly thereafter, primarily at Hannegan Speedway.
Career: Jackson has been one of Whatcom County's top riders for several seasons and he decided to turn professional at age 16. Since then, he's spent much of his time traveling and competing on the West Coast, racing at venues such as Qwest Field in Seattle (he rode in the American Motorcycle Association Supercross there in April), in Anaheim, Calif., Las Vegas and Los Angeles. He competes in the same events as ESPN- and SPEED Channel-level riders such as James Stewart, Chad Reed, Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto of Poulsbo.
Bumps in the road: During a qualifying heat at the Seattle AMA Supercross races April 16, Jackson missed a jump and suffered serious injuries when he hit his face on his motorcycle's handlebar.
"I came up short on a 75-foot triple," Jackson said. "I broke both eye sockets and all my nasal bones."
On April 22, Jackson underwent surgery to have four metal plates and one plastic plate inserted to help rebuild his face. Despite the injuries, Jackson said he's certain to ride in the spring and summer, beginning with local competition at Hannegan Speedway and culminating in July at the AMA Motocross date in Washougal, Wash.
"I'll be back in six weeks," Jackson said. "No question about it."
Not going solo: Even though it's Jackson who does the driving, he's quick to point out all those who have helped. Local sponsors, chiefly Lifestyles Honda, have stepped in with support, and Jackson lauded Kyle VanDyken, one of his instructors. "He's actually the person who taught me how to ride a dirt bike," Jackson said. "He helped me out when I was younger, rode with me and taught me how to do certain things."
The goal: Jackson said he hopes to make motorcycle racing his profession. Motocross and Supercross is big business, and the corporate sponsorship list is impressive: Monster Energy drinks, Toyota, DC apparel, Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki. Although sponsors sometimes approach riders for a potential business relationship, Jackson said, more often the riders have to contact companies with their qualifications, achievements and resumes. He knows the path is difficult and wildly competitive, but that just makes him more driven. "I would just like to be able to make motocross a career," he said.
