Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival Brings Array of Art, Artists

Nannette and Kevin Curtiss sat on the curb along Chicago Avenue Sunday afternoon during the Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival as their three sons chalked drawings into the street’s pavement.

“Today’s a beautiful day,” Nannette Curtiss said.

She said her family, who has lived in Hinsdale for eight years, comes to all the village’s street festivals and the best part is the socializing that goes on.  

“It’s the community aspect of it … Seeing all your friends and the kids see all their little school friends.”

Crowds, though, seemed smaller than usual in 2011, Nannette said.

The 38th annual Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival, put on by the Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce, brought the artwork of 130 different artists to Burlington Park Saturday and Sunday. The art for sale spanned a wide range; from paintings, to pottery, to felted derby hats to blown-glass putters. The artists’ hometowns ranged just as wide: from Western Springs, Ill., to Fort Thomas, Kent., to Export, Pa., to Marietta, Ga.

The one-named photographer Kenyatta—who was born in Kenya, raised in Chicago, and now lives in Heverlee, Belgium—was selling photographs he took all over the world.

“I photograph people in developing countries and try to educate the western countries about other cultures,” Kenyatta said, emphasizing his positive spin on life in other places. “People normally don’t get out of their own area or comfort zone. They look at the news, look at other things, and say, ‘Hey that’s how other people live, isn’t it awful?’”

The self-proclaimed “old school” artist who still uses film and silk screens to create his art, not digital cameras and Photoshop, came to the Hinsdale festival for the first time one week after an art show in Hyde Park. He will travel to shows in 15 states between May and October before heading back to Belgium.

The 2011 Hinsdale festival, Kenyatta said, was slow sales-wise and attendees made  little conversation.

“It is my first time and last,” he said.

Potter Hilaire Ridlon, who owns Circle-in-a-Sqaure Pottery (Round Rock, Texas), said traffic picked up near his booth located along Chicago Avenue with the sunny weather Sunday after a cloudy Saturday, but he still was disappointed with sales.

“I hoped for more, actually,” said Ridlon, who spent part of his childhood living in Hinsdale and has family ties in the area. “I’ve been doing shows in this area for quite awhile, and you never can tell with a show. I think it could be busier, but that’s how it is.
