Cave Creek School board puts override measure to voters

“I think Arizonans are starting to get sensitive to where we rank in the country in terms of education dollars,” board member Mark Warren said. “I think they’ve seen what our district has been able to do with limited funding and would like to see what we’re capable of if our children were given the same opportunities as kids in other states.” “We’ve done as much as possible to keep the state’s financial problems out of the classroom,” board president David Schaefer said. “We’re already doing more with less. I think our district should have a trademark on that. We can’t afford to lose more teaching positions. We cannot lose art, music and P.E. We can’t exacerbate our housing market by weakening our schools. We need to end this seemingly endless series of cuts. As a fiscal conservative and a financial professional I vote yes.” The list includes the loss of elementary art, P.E., music, and band. The potential losses also include all-day kindergarten, the loss of an administrator, an administrative assistant, an assistant at the high school, as many as 26 teachers, a nurse, two secondary librarians, a 10 percent cut to the supply budget as well as the World Language Program that was just implemented, among others. The survey conducted by the district supports that belief to some degree. While the survey of voters showed that 57 percent of voters believe that education in the state is headed in the wrong direction while only 29 percent believe it is heading in the right direction voters weren’t nearly as negative when it comes to the Cave Creek Unified School District as 38 percent believe the district is moving in the right directions, 26 believe it’s moving in the wrong direction while 35 percent were unsure. “Last year we had to make a painful and controversial decision to close a school, but what we saw is that our kids are resilient,” Warren said. “They weren’t as stressed as everybody feared. We made that tough call and it has put us in a position where we’re not in nearly as tough of shape as some of the other districts around the state.

Wow.  A huge blow to the theory that parents in the district want a charter style school.  Of course the district doesn’t understand that it is not the uniforms and calling yourself an academy, but parents who go to outside the district want high expectations, challenging academics, and a culture of high achievement.  We have not seen anything at Desert Sun Academy that sets it apart from other schools in the district, much less approaches the curriculum and programs offered by those schools attracting Cave Creek Unified students.  Of course we called DSA “windows dressing” here and also pointed out that the DSA move to K-8 was back-doored with no notice to the parents and community. Again, the district is reaping what it sows. Update:  Bizarre. Just 14 days ago the Arizona Republic quoted the Principal of Desert Sun Academy stating the 7th grade was coming.  For reference there are around 60 students in the current DSA 6th grade.  If they cancelled 7th grade, we could likely assume they have less than 45 students committed.  The district sure did hang the reporter, Mary Beth Faller, out to dry. Of course this article was not really news (the coming 7th grade was not new), but a disguised advertisement for new enrollment.  Heck it even had Bert’s phone number at the bottom.

I think a lot of it is the principal leaving. We were at DSA for a year before relocating to another state but I would have stayed there for 7th grade too. He did a lot for that school and their curriculum was hands above the other elementary schools in CCUSD. I disagree with you that DSA did not stand apart from the other elementary schools. We moved from another school within the district because DSA taught Core Knowledge and taught it well.

This district fails once again but continues to push forward with their own agenda. Wake up CCUSD93 we are not drinking your kool-aid. While the Ex DSA parent had pride and appreciation for the school he/she had no praise for the cluster at STMS. Let's not forget that a year ago Jana Miller and the district were gung-ho on another academy/prep school swearing up and down that this was what the community wanted. HA! CCUSD93 You are out of touch with your community!
