BUZZ/WIRK KDW's Third Run, Small Boat's 40th on slate for Saturday
The marine weather forecast for the weekend suggests it will be perfect for exploring the ocean blue for big fish. Anglers who also enjoy a competitive edge to their fishing will have two area fishing tournaments to choose to enter. In just its third year, the BUZZ/WIRK KDW Fishing Tournament has grown into an affair with a much broader reach. Now adding a "Seafood Festival" and "Discount Marine Marketplace" to its title, the KDW has become a two-day long event that will cap off with a live concert at Jupiter's Carlin Park free to the public.
Tournament anglers are invited to fish for over $15,000 in cash in kingfish, dolphin and wahoo divisions along with cash for heaviest snapper and heaviest grouper out of several inlets on the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches. There are weigh stations at Pirates Cove Resort and Marina in Port Salerno, Jupiter Pointe Marina in Tequesta and Riviera Beach Municipal Marina. The entry fee is $195 per boat with no limit for number of anglers.
The tournament kicks off at 5 p.m. with registration and the Captains Party at Guanabanas, 960 N. A1A, Jupiter. Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. those who are not fishing can enjoy the Greater Yamaha Seafood Festival and Discount Marine Marketplace at Carlin Park in Jupiter. There will be activities for children. Live entertainment includes Emily Brook, the Nouveaux Honkies, at 7:15 p.m. James Wesley and at 8:30 p.m. Ed Kowalczyk formerly of the band LIVE.

Small Boat Turns 40
One of Florida's oldest offshore fishing tournaments created for the owner of smaller vessels will fish its 40th anniversary tournament Saturday out of St. Lucie Inlet. The Stuart Sailfish Club's Small Boat Tournament, named originally for the maximum length restriction for vessels permitted to enter, was the first event of its kind on the Treasure Coast when it began in 1971. Although the definition of a small boat has changed over the years, tournament rules cap boat lengths at 35 feet, or any outboard-powered vessels this year.
Anglers will compete for cash, trophies and prizes in sailfish release, and heaviest dolphin, kingfish, cobia and wahoo categories. There will also be a Top Boat award, and a unique 1-in-100 opportunity for the winners of each meat fish category to win $5,000 based on matching weight.
Entry for the event is $160 per boat covering up to two Sailfish Club member anglers or $200 for two non-member anglers. Additional member anglers are $70, non-members $80 and juniors $40.
Marine Weather Forecasts - News

And just last week, the United Nations pledged to upgrade its space weather forecasts. But most people have never heard of space weather, which is a problem, because both high and low solar activity have serious effects on life on Earth.

Chris Parker, Chief Forecaster for the USA's Marine Weather Center (www. MWXC.com), has a passion for both weather and boating and he shares his extensive knowledge of marine weather through his vessel-specific weather forecasts and routing advice over

That theme repeats through Thursday, the Weather Service says, with high pressure to our southwest notching temperatures up. But the warmup should be a bit more modest than forecasts suggested earlier this week. On Tuesday, the first day of summer,

Before Boating, Know Your Marine Weather Forecast
Knowing the weather forecast from a local news agency or cable weather channel is not enough when it comes to safe boating. The skies may be clear, and the day warm, but unless you know the marine weather forecast, you don’t know if high winds have worked up large waves, or if a storm is brewing somewhere off the coast.
The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA (pronounced NOAH), provides marine weather forecasts through the National Weather Service . You can obtain a forecast by internet or NOAA weather radio , which broadcasts marine weather on a continuous cycle. The forecasts are updated at least four times daily, and the National Weather Service recommends checking the marine forecast often if you plan to take an extended trip.
The marine forecast consists of that day’s, plus a three-day extended prediction, of wind direction and speed, wave height, and any other specific weather information such as precipitation predictions or storm warnings. You can obtain a coastal marine forecast (up to 25 miles out) for the specific area you will be boating in. If you plan to cruise, know the off-shore or high seas forecast.
Knowing the marine weather forecast will help you make sound boating decisions. For example: if the morning wind speed is light at 10 knots, and waves are 1 – 2 ft., but predicted to increase to 20 knots and 6 ft. by evening, you may decide to take the boat out in the morning and return to port well before rough seas make for a dangerous situation.
The main thing to remember is that weather is not just what you see here and now. It’s dynamic and changes constantly. Before you go boating, get the marine weather forecast so you can make informed safe boating decisions.
