In this ever-changing world it is no small thing that the Internet has leveled the playing field for creative endeavor, and for people from all walks of life. Traditional media is being given a serious run for its money in that, in this day and age, the average John and Jane Q. Public can now be publishers, radio hosts and producers, TV stars, and launch their own syndicated material through RSS feeds, known as Really Simple Syndication.With that in mind, here are a few ideas on how a band or artist can take advantage of multiple platforms to launch their careers and express themselves in the biggest fashion possible.
This is the coolest thing since sliced bread. I'm talking about podcasting here, and how you can have a voice in this vast wasteland. Who says silence is golden? Think about this for a minute ... podcasting is probably the healthiest thing to hit the planet, because literally anyone with a computer, a simple audio editor and recording device can launch his or her own radio show. You can also invest about $50.00 in a web cam, and host your own teleseminars, have live performances, and interact with your audience. Talk, music, art, or politics; whatever trips your trigger. The reason I say this is healthy is because it gives all of us the opportunity to speak about what's on our minds, instead of just letting it fester inside where it grows into the winter of our own discontent.
If I were an independent artist, I'd explore every avenue available through this ultra-cool marketing tool. Go solo, or double your trouble and hook up with another band or artist and talk about your music. Each of you spin a couple of tunes, remind the audience to go to your websites to download your music, either for free or a buck a tune ... and launch your show on every available podcast directory you can find. People subscribe to your show (for free!) and every time you upload a new program, it's ready whenever the listener has time to sit back, relax and enjoy. Make sure you keep the same name for your show, which could just be your band’s name. You can then link the podcast as an .xml feed from your website while hosting it on an open source directory such as Podcast Generator , and then make sure to get on iTunes, and you will suddenly find yourself with a lot more listeners, and a bigger fan base.
