School baseball: Falmouth wraps up tournament berth
By Cape Cod Times, Hyannis, Mass.May 24--FALMOUTH -- Joey Olsen smacked a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning to plate three runs and Falmouth qualified for the MIAA tournament on Monday with a 4-3 victory over Dartmouth.
Falmouth (10-8, 5-7 Atlantic Coast League) scored its first run on an Andrew McGill RBI double in the second inning before Olsen drove in three in the fourth.
Ryan Johnson earned the victory with two innings of shutout relief. Alex Sodekson came on in the top of the sixth and induced a double play to get the Clippers out of a jam, holding the Indians scoreless over the final 1.
Falmouth was held to five hits while Dartmouth managed just six hits.
Barnstable 9, D-Y 2
HYANNIS -- D.J. Crook went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, RBI and a run scored to lead the Red Raiders in the non-league matchup against the Dolphins.
Dennis Bayner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, and right fielder Everett Walsh had a diving catch to spark the Barnstable defense. The Red Raiders (9-5) host Dartmouth on Wednesday.
Bourne 5, Martha's Vineyard 0
BOURNE -- An offensive burst in the fifth inning, including a three-run double by Bourne's Sean Griffith, yielded all five runs for the Canalmen in their win over Martha's Vineyard.
Pitcher Hunter Silva struck out eight, walked one and scattered six hits in the shutout. Shortstop Jesse Burgess played a strong game defensively for Bourne (8-9). Corey Perrotta had two hits for the Vineyarders.
The Canalmen will play three consecutive South Coast Conference games to determine their postseason fate.
Chatham 22, Sturgis 13
CHATHAM -- Brandon Alvarez had a home run and drove in four runs and Peter Sheppard went 5-for-5 as the Blue Devils bested the Storm in Cape & Islands League play.
Alvarez bashed a three-run homer in Chatham's 10-run fourth inning, finishing 3-for-4. Matt Lucas went 2-for-5 and also had a three-run homer in the fourth inning.
Sheppard had two singles, two doubles and a two-run triple, the three-bagger coming in the five-run first inning. His brother John went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Peter Sheppard also earned the victory with three innings of relief.
Zac Crawford led off the game with a double, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout for an early 1-0 lead for Sturgis. The Storm tied the game with an seven-run third inning.
