Debbie Gibson talks Justin and Selena's PDA, Miley's future & more
By: Jacqueline Fulton -- iHeartRadio
Debbie Gibson is back! The '80s icon is gearing up for a tour with fellow pop princess Tiffany , and she dropped by iHeartRadio to talk about the future and reminisce about the '80s. And since Debbie was the original teen queen, we asked her to dispense some priceless advice to the latest crop of teen stars. In an exclusive game called "What Would Debbie Do?" the "Lost In Your Eyes" singer shares her sometimes brutal honesty with the likes of Bieber , Miley and more.
iHeartRadio: How did the tour with Tiffany come about?
Debbie: Basically since the beginning of time people have been wanting Tiffany and I to perform together. Pop music is all about the public and what they want, and this is like, give the people what they want!
iHeartRadio: You and Tiffany were always pitted against each other in the press. Do you think the media tends to create rivalries between female stars?
Debbie: Female rivalries have always been played out in the press. There was Tiffany and I, there was Christina and Britney , there's Selena and Demi . And it's like, just how we girls have multiple girlfriends, why can't you like two girl singers? The beauty of music is you can own lots of music, so I always found those rivalries a little ridiculous. Also, it's like they always want to create a good girl and a bad girl. I was always a good girl, Tiffany was the bad girl. Christina was the bad girl, Britney was the good girl...now that might have reversed a little (laughs).
iHeartRadio: Do people freak out when they see you and Tiffany hanging out?
Debbie: Definitely. Years ago, Tiffany and I went to dinner in Little Italy and we may as well have been hosting a meet and greet. People were like, "Oh my God, it's Debbie Gibson! Oh my God, it's Tiffany -- but why are you guys together? You're supposed to hate each other!"
iHeartRadio: There's a lot of '80s nostalgia happening in pop culture right now. Why do you think people love the '80s so much?
Debbie: The '80s were just unapologetically fun. The music was hooky, the fashions were loud. It was an innocent time for music.
iHeartRadio: There's a lot to love about the '80s, but what are some things you hated about that decade?
Debbie: I hated the big hair -- I hope that never comes back! The shoulder pad thing? Um, not so much. I do hope that real lighters come back at concerts though, because the whole flame on the iPhone thing just ain't cutting it.
