Radio Hungama Celebrates 4th Anniversary with Year-Round Festivities
HOUSTON: From the time that he was old enough to ride the bus on his own, Sridhar Dadi was a regular fixture at events all over his native coastal city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. He had no qualms about representing his parents at weddings and other family events. He enjoyed being visible, recognized, and had the outgoing personality to carry it off. By the time college rolled around and he moved to Guntur to pursue a degree in engineering, students at the campus soon knew his name through his unflagging determination in organizing cultural programs and activities and getting everyone involved. Dadi became the go-to man for au courant news on movies, the latest dance moves, and anything wildly resembling entertainment. It would be several years later that he would found Radio Hungama seas away from his land of birth. This year the program triumphantly celebrates its 4th anniversary. As part of the yearlong festivities honoring the community for supporting his vision, Dadi has planned several satellite melas and food, the program includes a cooking contest, Tollywood/Bhangra/Classical dances, fun quizzes, games and other activities. Sponsors include this publication IANews, Green Mountain Energy, Don McGill Toyota, and Pavani Express, to name a few.
It all began back in the year 2000, when Dadi emigrated to the U.S. He completed a master’s degree in environmental engineering at Texas A & M University in College Station, after which he moved to California and settled into a regular 9 – 5 job. But there was a void in his life. He missed showmanship; he missed mingling with a crowd who shared his interests. In 2006, a random job search landed him in Houston. En route to his hotel room from the airport, he fidgeted with the dials of the radio in the rental car, and found to his great joy several stations spinning Indian music and enthusiastic radio jockeys engaging listeners with playful banter in Gujarati and Hindi.
“I immediately felt like I was home,” said Dadi. “I also saw an opportunity to do something like that for the Telugu community.”
He did the research and found that there wasn’t a Telugu program on the airwaves. He approached a local radio station and did a trial run for the very first time in June 2007. It exhilarated Dadi to have found his niche. He made flyers detailing his program, and handed them out at the temple and at events where the Telugu community gathered. As interest piqued, the community supported him by advertising on his show. After six months, Dadi was on his own with a 10am – 1pm program every Sunday on KCHM AM 1050. And Radio Hungama was born of one man’s tenacity.

What is the difference between western showmanship shirts and western horsemanship shirts? I need a showmanship one and I am going to buy a plain shirt/jacket and design myself, but I don’t know what kind of shirt/jacket I should get. HELP!
I would suggest you go to the level of show you intend to show at, in the area you plan to show, and watch a show to see what people are wearing for showmanship and then the riding classes. Try to find something similiar, flattering to your body type and your horse’s color, and professional appearing. Styles vary slightly if you are going to show at Breed shows (and vary from breed to breed – an Arab exhibitor is going to dress slightly differently than an AQHA exhibitor) and from location to location. In my area, in both Open and APHA shows, adults showing showmanship normally wear a jacket (either hip length or longer) a slim fitting shirt underneath such as a slinky, a pair of dress pants to match or properly coordinate with the jacket, cowboy or roper boots and a good quality cowboy hat in a color to suit your jacket and pants. At really small shows some exhibitors will simply wear their horsemanship shirt. Or they will wear a slinky with a nice vest overtop. Youth can get away easier with nice shirts. And yes, some people do wear gloves, but lately the style has become less for them so check to see what others are doing. I really recommend going on to Hobby Horse’s website, even if you have no intention of buying a Hobby Horse shirt. They have a color wheel that shows the colors that best suit different color horses, the also have a chart that tells what men and women wear at various different types of shows and for different classes (reining, trail, western pleasure, etc) It is very helpful, and by looking at their jackets it will give you an idea what is current in the U.S. and Canada. Good luck. I’ve had really good success buying used Western show clothes off Ebay, that may be an option for you especially when you’re just starting out! Oh Yes! You can wear your western shirt when you show in both Western Horsemanship (riding the horse) and Western Showmanship (walking beside the horse). I would suggest selecting colors that will compliment your horse. That is if you have a grey or bay horse with black mane and tail, you could wear a black jacket and pants and your favorite shirt color. If you are showing in a very hot state such as Texas, you could show without the jacket. (It is up to you) Gloves will give your a professional look also revealing an extention of your arm. When you move your arm and hand, be direct but graceful. Don’t make unnecessary moves. Relax. Lots of practice at home will help.
