Taunton shop will offer free fly fishing classes for beginners
A Taunton shop is offering complimentary fly fishing classes for beginners next week.
The Bear’s Den, as an Orvis equipment dealer, is offering a free Fly Fishing 101 class on Saturday at 3 p.m. Participants will meet at the Bear’s Den, 98 Summer St., and will then be trained on the basics of casting, holding a fly rod and other basic mechanics. “Never before has there been such an organized effort at so many locations across the U.S. to bring new entrants to the sport of fly fishing,” said Tom Rosenbauer, marketing director for Orvis. “Based on the success of last year’s program, we’re expanding our efforts to be able to bring 10,000 students through the classes, helping to introduce the joys of the outdoors and the serenity and challenge of fly fishing to new enthusiasts.

"I had bought an Orvis Rocky Mountain fly rod and wanted some trout to fish for. I called the Virginia Trout Company and had them put some fish in one of the farm's [spring-fed] ponds. "The fellow who brought the trout suggested we stock the stream and
1944 Orvis fly rod, what is it worth in Appraisals ...
I recently inherited a fly rod owned by my grandfather. It is approximately nine feet, four inches long and comes in three equal length parts. It also includes a second tip. The maker's name is printed on the screw adjustment ring and reads, Maker Charles F. Orvis Co. Inc. Manchester, VT. An inscription on the reel seat handle reads, Built by Wesley D. Jordon for Dr. Minor C. Hill 1944. It was used, but I think it is in excellent (EXC) condition. I never saw my grandfather use it and I think it has sat in a closet for many decades. My uncle told me my grandfather bought it on a fishing trip to Canada in the late 1950s. The pole came in a green cloth bag with no label. It was in an unlabeled aluminum tube with the word "used" scratched into the surface near the top. There is a detached cork handle that someone has written the name "Leonard" with blue ink. The person working at the Orvis shop nearby told me it was for fishing salmon, not trout. I am not a fisherman and would like to get it into the hands of someone who would really appreciate it. Thanks for any help-the images are posted in my profile FWIW, I have a very similar 9' 3" Orvis Salmon rod built two years after yours in 1946.
Mine is also a three-piece, two tip rod with a 5" detachable fighting butt. It has an all-aluminum down locking reel seat without your rod's nice inscription. My rod is marked "Patent Pending" for the bakelite impregnation process. The tube and bag are very similar, if not identical, to yours.
Unfortunately perhaps, Orvis Salmon rods don't command very high prices. Most, even the earlier rods like these, go for about $350-$450.
That said, your rod might be worth more due to the Jordan inscription.
