Remembering our soldiers in Milford
Through smiles, poems and songs, students and staff at Memorial Elementary School yesterday honored fallen soldiers and those fighting abroad.
Kindergarteners through second-graders piled onto the lawn and sat before a row of veterans and local officials for the Memorial Day ceremony.
For Angelo Mazzuchelli, post commander of the Italian Veterans Club, it's always a special program.
"It's more or less educating the young future leaders of our country," Mazzuchelli said.
Principal Francis "Andy" Anderson greeted the crowd and explained the school's long-standing tradition.
He said Memorial Elementary School makes it a point to honor and remember the troops. It was the school's 51st Memorial Day ceremony.
"Memorial School has a rich tradition and culture and on this special day we pay tribute to our school's name - Memorial Elementary School - a name that shares the history of a national day of remembrance and honor," he said. "It is time for our students to experience the value and significance of the school's name as its history of recognition for our fallen heroes - heroes who dedicated their lives to defend our country to make it safe and free is appreciated and honored."
To pay homage to one of its own, Anderson presented Melissa Picard, a first-grade teacher, with a blue-star quilt knit by former teacher Kathleen Byrnes.
He said Picard's husband is currently serving with the National Guard and her son is serving with the Army, both in Afghanistan.
"May it bring you luck and fortune in a safe return home," he said.
Second-graders Madison Fletcher and Anthony Oliva served as masters of ceremony, and introduced kids as they led the crowd in explanations of the Pledge of Allegiance, patriotic poems and songs like "America the Beautiful."
Afterward, Anderson invited spectators to check out the school's Hall of Heroes, dedicated to dozens of Milford soldiers who lost their lives in battle, dating back to the Korean War.
Jim Webber, a Milford resident and veteran of the Vietnam War, said the ceremony is important.
"I think it's wonderful. It gets all of the kids involved and they get to know their history," Webber said.

Poem: Fallen Heroes | Wanderer Thoughts
My heart and soul goes out to those who have made such great sacrifices. Truly though, they not only learn the “savage lessons” but bring some home and teach others. There are a lot of misconceptions about the citizens of the warzones that America is currently involved in.
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard a soldier speak so kindly of the populous, in the face of those who are ignorant about who those civilians truly are. May the troops always find a welcoming hand in the direst of places they are deployed.
