Patricia Misiuk: A Bit of Confusion In the Cosmos

More recently, a closer-to-home quirk is affecting our own — and, yes, it's still a planet — Earth. Due to a fluctuation in the Earth's core, the magnetic north pole is shifting by around 40 miles per year. That breaks down to about 24 feet every hour. Because airport runway numbers indicate their position relative to the magnetic north pole, a huge paint-a-thon is in progress to update signage.

Earlier this year travelers at Tampa International Airport had to deal with the usual pat-downs and shoe removals while pilots had to avoid the main runway while painters were changing it from 18R/36L to 19R/1L. The situation has sparked a stimulus plan for the paint industry.

Again the earth and its wobbly orbit are impacting my day-to-day life. My morning ritual consists of feeding our golden retriever Macushla, preparing and eating breakfast, solving the word jumble and reading my horoscope.
