The Psychedelic Furs' Tim Butler: The Cream Interview
TB: We did some last year. We have England and the United Kingdom, and six weeks ago we did the west coast - we do Texas and West Coast.
NC: How different the feeling on stage, playing something that is scripted as rigid as a file is, as far as the song order and all that, against only play a regular show with a traditional?
TB: It's strange doing this record because every song is a very up, aggressive, angry songs, so it's a great record that takes stamina to play [laughs]. But it's fun. It's fun to relive it - it brings back memories. When we wrote the record we were angry young British rockers (laughs) who wanted to conquer the world, you know? Angry against everything.
NC: Are you still angry?
TB: Mars Williams, Clarence Clemons of the New Wave? [Laughs] I'm going to tell him that! The "little man" of the New Wave! But I do not know why it would not be used more.We got in the group because we were fans when we started, Roxy Music, and they had a sax player cool, and they sound nice and I like to think that our sound as a fusion of the Sex Pistols and Roxy Music.
CN: Now, you were there, and I was not, but in 1977 - that's when the band started, right?
TB: The whole thing is that people in punk bands did not feel they could be part of the genre - the glam and progressive rock. You watch these videos of these bands, or to hear and say, "I can not play like that. It'll take years for me to learn to play like Steve Howe or Carlos Santana or something. "But they had so much anger in the things around them that they want out musically, yes, what do you play? You take a guitar or bass and play two chords and screaming and yelling at her. But you say something aggressive and you get your opinions and thoughts there, which is what punk did.Now if something went on, other than the fact that he gave a shot of adrenaline in the arm of the music industry, and has made younger people who were not these kinds of indigestible prog- people are in rock music is what he did. The same as Nirvana did in the early 90s, the much-needed shot in the butt, which I think he needs now. I think the music is pretty soulless, mostly, so we need another Sex Pistols or Nirvana to come along and take it to the next area, it will go.
