The Edinburgh Festival 2011: The naughty truth about the Seventies

The late sixties was always portrayed as the culmination of an ugly party wonderful. After all the dreams of hippies and colorful festivities, suddenly there was Charles Manson, Altamont, and a succession of rock-star deaths. It is suggested that, as the harsh reality intruded, it was like the lights went up a slope and everyone outside the home, ready to work in the morning.

An excellent new book of reminiscences by Barry Miles against culture-mover-and-shaker painted a very different picture of what happened next.Simply titled In the sixties, it shows the party rolling for a few years, according to the rules of change, perhaps, but always with the same motive power. As the author says in his introduction, "The Sixties as a period of cultural history definable ran from 1963 to 1977."

Miles, who will speak at the Edinburgh Book Festival, is certainly a reliable commentator on the folklore of the hippie era.In 1965 he co-founded the underground newspaper International Times and in an effort to raise money for her, helped set the "Technicolor Dream 14 hours" at Alexandra Palace, where artists including Pink Floyd, John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He also ran Zapple subsidiary, spoken word of the Beatles' label, Apple. After moving to the United States to work for some of the writers broke up, he ends up back in London as a writer for NME, as punk rock exploded onto the music scene.

Since then he has continued to write about the revolutionary events and ideas of the time. His authorized biography of Paul McCartney was released in 1998. More recently, the first installment of his memoirs, in the Sixties largely detailed his close involvement with the Beatles. In the sixties defends a similar style franchise behind the scenes revelation and humor crazy.

In the opening chapter, Miles - who was usually only known by his nickname - land in New York in 1970. A few doors of his apartment, there is a huge explosion in a secret bomb factory run by the radical group the Weathermen.Like many hippies, he fled to the hills to avoid such urban chaos: he lives in the town of Allen Ginsberg in Cherry Valley in New York, where he catalogs of audio archives, Beat poet.

"It was certainly part of what was happening," said Miles from his base in the Pyrenees. "There were not that many people living in communes in the sixties, just a little pack of leaders, if you want. I think a lot of experimental things that have been raised in cities have taken a lot time to seep into the rest of the world.
