New Finance Director Chosen
The town has hired Mary Ann Harris as its new finance director-treasurer.
She replaces Kevin Kane, who left in March after 17 years with the town. He took a position in Clinton, where he will be finance director for the town and school system.
The town received about 30 applications for the position. Eight candidates were selected for formal interviews with a cpanel that included representatives from the board of finance, board of selectmen, a municipal finance director, a town manager and the director of administrative services.
The panel recommended three candidates. And from there, Harris was selected.
Harris, who lives in Enfield, has served as finance director for the towns of Millbury, MA, and Windsor Locks. She has also served as town accountant for the town of Ludlow, MA, and as the comptroller for the Springfield Parking Authority.
She has experience with bond issues, major construction projects, development of financial and audit compliance policies, employee benefit management and town fund management.
She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut and is a certified Massachusetts Municipal Government Accountant and has been an active member of the Government Finance Officers Association and a number of other professional government finance-related organizations.
At the July 11 board of selectmen’s meeting where her appointment was announced, First Selectman Mary Glassman said Harris “stood out for her municipal experience.”
The appointment still has to formally be approved by the board of finance, which is expected at its July 19 meeting.
After town officials were notified Kane would be leaving, things moved quickly. The town contacted Hartford officials, as the city recently underwent a finance director search, for possible candidates for a consultant position to the department of finance while the town conducts its search.
"This is the most important position in the town," said Glassman of the finance director position soon after Kane left.
Michael Foley was tapped as the consultant to help the town during the transition and was on board quickly enough to work with Kane before his departure.
