Freestyle Winners Of The 2011 PWA Sotavento Fuerteventura Grand SlamSteven Van Broeckhoven and Sarah-Quita Offringa were declared the winners of the 2011 PWA Grand Slam Freestyle competition after ten days of intense battles in stunning Sotavento.
The top seeded sailors quickly advanced through their opening heats of the Men's Freestyle competition at the 2011 PWA Sotavento Fuerteventura Grand Slam .
Steven Van Broeckhoven and Jose Estredo defeated their respective opponents all the way to the final, where they went head to head to decide who would gain the early competition advantage.
Despite Van Broeckhoven's shaka-flaka and planing burner, Estredo landed a bolt upright spock-culo and future diablo and won the final.
The double elimination may have allowed some sailors to cover up the mistakes, but the real action was in the finals, where Van Broeckhoven faced the four times world champion Jose Estredo .
Having earned a position in the final, Van Broeckhoven nailed a monster culo and massive konos on both tacks in a desperate bid to win the heat. Estredo sailed a perfect heat landing all of his most daring moves and the two moved on together to the super-final.
The crowds fell silent for the men's super final. Estredo was first to move landing a clean spock-culo in front of the judges. Van Broeckhoven fought back with a dry ponch and a colossal shaka-flaka. Nine minutes of action flew by as the world’s best freestylers performed every move possible to impress the judges. With a 3-2 decision from the judges, Van Broeckhoven was declared the event winner.
Laure Treboux opened up women’s competition on fine form landing a clean set of maneuvers to see her advance through to the semi-finals past Danielle Lucas. Sarah-Quita Offringa blitzed her way past Svetlana Martynova landing all the big moves. Heat twenty-three of the women’s single elimination saw Treboux and Offringa dominate their opponents.
With just seven minutes to perform their most impressive stunts, Offringa launched into a perfect toad, a switch kono and a smooth funnel, placing herself well ahead of Treboux on the score-sheets.
Treboux was on fire throughout the double eliminations and upped the game by landing a one handed clew-first spock and a one handed flaka to secure her place in the final.
