KARATE: Sensei Steve Crowley earns 8th Dan certificate

Fairford pioneer of karate instructor Steve Crowley won an eighth dan amateur Martial Association (AMA).

He is one of the highest certifications granted in the world of karate and a reward for his 45 years in the sport.

Crowley, a fitness fanatic self style, remains in good health at the age of 72 years, in spite of pneumonia last year.

In 1978 he founded his karate school is now based at the Palmer Hall in Fairford, where he chairs three times a week with a maximum of 60 students at a time.

The club is called Heikina Ki Kai – meaning ‘calm, unmoved spirit’ in Japanese.

Literally, hundreds of pupils have earned blacks belts in karate under his tutelage and he prides himself on the discipline and respect that Wado-Ryu Karate instils.

Crowley told the Standard: “The father of one of my former pupils told me the other day that his son, who has recently qualified as an airline pilot, would not have passed but for the discipline he learned coming to my karate sessions in Fairford.” When Steve remarried last year at the age of 71, the guard of honour was made up of his pupils and his seven ushers were all karate instructors that he has trained.

“The presentation of the 8th Dan certificate came as complete surprise,” said Crowley.

“The club kept it a secret from me and the presentation was made by my chief instructor Mick Adams at one of our karate weekends away. It was a very humbling moment and there were a lot of tears."

Although it is a leading authority on the country's traditional karate, Sensei Crowley is not opposed to defending the fitness regimes at the end the more populist of the industry.

In the past, it was required to take dance classes online and still oversees many aerobics at Fairford Sports Centre, who traveled to America to earn his teaching certificate for Aerobics music.

Eastleach born in 1939, Steve moved to Fairford at the age of 24 years and stayed in the area since.

An athlete throughout his youth, he played football for CHQ, Hannington and Highworth Town and enjoy a spell as manager of Fairford Town FC.

"I was also very fond of diving, which I did at Cheltenham, but at that time in the 1960s, Kevin Hamilton-Stewart, who later became a 7th Dan, ran karate classes at the Center TA in Cirencester, "said Crowley the father of three." He introduced me to Karate and I quickly hooked.

I am a 3 rd degree black belt in taekwondo. I have taken for 12 years w / a few breaks here and there. I was asked to teach TKD at daycare center i work at. Techniqually I can do that? I get certified third n I have my certificate of Korea. Am I allowed children climb the tether strap freely as any other instructor or I have to have some kind of liscence? the business is well i was concerned only techniqalities martial arts fighter?

Well, I personally see no problem, since it has ordered all the legal and business output. Personally, I think it should, is giving children the gift of defense, fitness, self confidence and much more. I can not think of a reason to do so. It comes down to what you think itself, but not just wake up and become a 3 rd degree black belt overnight.
