We cannot stop a hurricane from moving up the coast and making landfall in South Carolina, but there are a number of measures we can take in our yards and gardens to limit damage.

Start by walking around your house and yard with an analytical eye for items that can become missiles in heavy wind. Look also for objects that can be damaged or cause damage to your own or neighboring property. Make a list.

Stake young trees only for the duration of the storm and until excess water has drained away.
Palm trees need regular maintenance. Remove only dead fronds. Leave fully and part green fronds to feed the tree and protect the bud. Stake palms if they are not well rooted in.
Dispose of branches and yard debris before a storm arrives. Be aware that branches and yard debris become projectiles in heavy wind.
Prune back any vines have grown top heavy on an arbor.
Drainage: Add soil to low areas with poor drainage. If necessary, add rocks to direct water in garden areas where downspouts empty, or below where rooftops converge.
Clear drainage channels. Make sure drains in your landscape are clear and working properly.
Keep gutters and downspouts clear.
Don’t fertilize, use insecticides or herbicides in your yard if a hurricane or tropical storm threatens to move up the coast. Rain from the storm will wash chemicals off your property and into our waterways.
