How to revitalise your roses
Although roses love rain, heavy rainfall makes the flowers “ball” before they open and also knocks lots of soggy petals to the ground, which smother plants beneath. Both attract mould spores. Pick up any soggy petals you find and cut off balled roses as soon as you spot them. Also, remove any spent blooms of repeat-flowering roses to encourage new flowers.
Now that the first flush is over, give your roses a feed with a specialist rose food or Vitax Q4 to keep the foliage healthy and promote another flush of flowers. Roses need a three-stage regime: apply a potash-rich feed in February to harden the wood, then apply specialist rose food in April and July to promote flowers. Feeding is highly important, as a rose in peak condition rarely succumbs to disease.

how to harden pine wood? | Hardwood Softwood
NB,
You really can’t do much to “harden” the wood. I have four cats and they’ll scratch oak as well as they scratch pine. I know you don’t want to hear it, but the real answer is to persuade you cats to leave the wood alone. They’re not attracted to it because it is a soft wood, they’re attracted to it because they, at sometime, got a notion to start clawing it like cats naturally do. I wouldn’t declaw my cats either. They need the defense that their claws provide. But anytime I see my cats working out on a corner of the carpet, a side of the sofa, or anything, I get on them immediately. They have a very short memory span, so you have to get their attention and startle them at the moment their doing it. You can put obstacles in front of the areas where they have developed as a scratching pad. After a while, they will forget they ever used it. Once you seal it, they odor of the wood will change and that may cause them to become un-interested.
