DHX2 is reported to be a more secure authentication method over DHX. Many users in trying to configure their NAS devices with Time Machine are receiving "server not supported" or other authentication errors, and cannot access previous Time Machine backups.

It seems as if NAS vendors did not make provisions for updated Netatalk in Lion. How and why this could come about, given that Lion developer code was available prior to final release, has been a source of debate in tech circles. That still begs the question of why other NAS makers haven't been more in front of the problem with workarounds, however. The 'hows' and 'whys' may not matter to the many NAS owners who 've upgraded to Lion and want their devices to work with Time Machine.

The real questions current NAS users (and those in the market for a new device) want answered are: How pervasive a problem is this? Which NASes are having authentication issues and what are the vendors planning to do to remediate? Let's be clear, this issue is not one caused by a "bug" or some problem inherent in OS X Lion. Apple has dictated that authentication over AFP shall be DHX2 and it's up to each vendor to ensure that their products can support the new protocol.
