Dustin Ackley's family talks about his rise to the Mariners
Monumental home runs tend to stand out in a city as small as that of North Carolina where Dustin Ackley grew up.
The people of Walnut Cove, population 1,500 give or take, can vividly remember the first Ackley high school home run as a rookie for the team of powerful South Stokes during the 2003 state tournament. Michael Matthews was in the dugout for South Stokes when the team coach, winning big already, gave a freshly promoted to Junior Varsity prospect his first at-bat as a hitter.
"It's hard to forget what happened next," said Matthews."He was basically on the cold bench and he came and hit a home run farther than I had seen someone hit a ball all year. I mean, he hit that thing on the field friggin softball girls. "
Those who grew up watching Ackley crush that ball the way the age of 5 years - whether in baseball, golf and tennis - are not surprised by the lightning fast start to his career as browsers. They say Ackley spent most of his childhood in competition with his peers much older and that helped him do things ahead of its time.
Only two months after being called to the majors, the second baseman is hitting.286 with five homers and a percentage of base-plus-slugging of 0851 while occupying a key place in the middle of the order of the Mariners.
This memorable home run back in Walnut Cove foreshadows what the fans are browsers.
"I knew it was good, but I did not know he was so good," said Danny Brown, a senior team when South Stokes Ackley hit the circuit in the playoffs. "It was either the first or second pitch. I do not want to say anything too weird, but it was probably 335, 340 feet of the fence and had to hit at least 370 feet.
"You see how Dusty is now and it is not so great.I can tell you, high school, it was that much smaller. So you do not forget something like that. "
