'Broadway Our Way' to entertain Friday

Come to the cabaret, old chum.

The Cañon City School District Summer SPLASh Program offers a two-week intensive music course and will present “Broadway Our Way 2011” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lou Del Pizzo Performing Arts Center at Cañon City High School, 1313 College Ave.

Class participants will be performing with the clinicians, including director Todd Albrecht, Barbara Beck, Emily Valley (Watson) and Tabitha Rooney.

Accompanying are Arlene Watson and Dena Brady. Andrew Fisher is offering his drama coaching expertise and Betsy McClenehan is helping with the theatre and dance part of the program. Tickets are available at Cross Music for $8. Albrecht began the summer Broadway Master Class and Camp Program last summer, with many parents and students asking for an encore performance this year.

“I feel like I’m at a time in my life where I can give up some summertime toward this program,” Albrecht said.

Valley, a former Cañon City High School Vocal Music Department student, has completed a degree at the University of Wyoming music theatre program and is working at the Midtown Arts Center in Fort Collins.

“Broadway Our Way 2011” also is featuring two recent graduates and hometown favorites: Daniel LaCroix and Michaela Chisolm.

Eighteen participants showed up Monday morning to begin the summer program, and over the two-week course, will prepare a full concert.

“We really push to stretch each of these kids,” Albrecht said. “I gave them a very full plate. Everybody is included in the opening number, the closing number and a large ensemble.”

A number of solos and duets also will be performed at the final concert. The Music Theatre and Vocal Camp includes acting exercises, singing warm-ups and exercises, music theatre dance and vocal master class performance opportunities. Campers receive two complimentary tickets to the final camp concert, a T-shirt and lunch before the final dress rehearsal on the final day of camp.

“The concert will be a full show,” Albrecht said. “There will be singing and dancing and full production numbers. It’s not a simple recital. These kids will put together a full Broadway revue show. The clinicians all will be performing with the kids.”

New to the camp this year is an additional Cabaret Performance at 2 p.m. June 26 at the Albany Event Center in Pueblo. Tickets for that performance are $10 and are available through the Sangre de Cristo Fine Art Center Box Office.

Workshop for Intermediate/Advanced Dancers Ages 9 (and up) June 27 to July 1 (Monday - Friday) 9:30 am to 4:30 pm

For older and more experienced dancers, a one week intensive which focus on many styles of dance including ballet, jazz, contemporary, modern, choreography, and dance improvisation in addition to classical ballet giving the serious dance student opportunities to learn techniques not available at other local dance studios.

Workshop for Younger Dancers Ages 9 - 12 July 5 through July 8 (Tuesday - Friday) 9:30am - 4:00pm Emphasizing the fun of moving to music while at the same time building strength, control, and coordination and the use of those skills in creating dance in a friendly, and non-competitive way. Great for students with no dance experience as well as those who have been taking classes for a few years. Enrollment Fee: $200

Three instructors and five guest artists will be offering classes encompassing mid-eastern dance, African, hip hop, ballet, jazz, modern, choreography, acting, as well as several other forms.

Keith Robinson - Partnering. Artistic Director and founding member of Robinson Ballet. Keith trained with Madam Nora Kiss in Paris, France and with Leonidas De Pian in Athens, Greece. Keith presently teaches ballet at the University of Maine in Orono, the Belfast Dance Studio and the School of the Robinson Ballet.

Maureen Lynch - Pointe. Artistic Director and founding member of Robinson Ballet. Maureen danced professionally with the Ballet Classique de Paris in France and Balletto Athenon in Athens, Greece. She teaches dance programs in three public schools, the Susanne Smith School in Levant, the Dedham School in Dedham, and at the Airline School in Aurora.

Stevie Dunham - Modern Dance. Stevie has been teaching dance to children and adults for over 7 years at dance studios in Bangor and Richmond, VA. She has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Her training includes Boston Ballet, Bates Dance Festival, Boston Summer Dance Festival and Florida Dance Festival. She has been a choreographer for Robinson Ballet Live for the past three years. Stevie earned her BFA in Dance and Choreography at Virginia Commonwealth University.
