Back in the Day - May 22, 2011: A look at Wanaque's past

An article that appeared in Suburban Trends about the Shippee family of Wanaque jogged the memory of longtime Wanaque resident Donald Townsend. Suburban Trends started a four-part series about the history of Wanaque based on Townsend's recollections and borough archives.

"Many people living in the Trends area will undoubtedly remember the physicians who worked in Wanaque , as they delivered a lot of babies, mostly at home," started the history. "David and James Shippee were father and son physicians who were well known and loved in town. The Shippees lived in the vicinity of Eric Avenue and a pharmacy bearing their name still stands along Ringwood Avenue."

Townsend said Dr. David Shippee, who delivered him and his siblings, "carried just about everything in that big, black bag and we got it all as part of the house call."

Another local physician who also made house calls was Dr. William Meier. He ha d his office at a home in Haskell near the DuPont explosives plant. He served as plant physician, treating DuPont employees for just about any ailment from illness to injuries suffered in explosions, Townsend said.

The doctor's son, George, followed in his dad's footsteps and became a physician working out of Butler .

Townsend also spoke about a teacher named Nellie Wetham who taught arithmetic at the Haskell School. Townsend said he was named after her son Donald, who also became a teacher at Butler High School.

The article said Gladys Ringle Rhinesmith was a familiar name in town, "even today as the building that houses the board of education offices and meeting room bears her name."

Townsend recalled there being no crime in Wanaque years ago. He said when he was a boy, the borough had only two policemen. One was Chief Harry Post who lived near Townsend. The Post family lived on Furnace Avenue.

"I was always welcome in their house," said Townsend. "Mrs. Post hugged me and wished me well when I left for overseas. Harry Post shook my hand, man to man, and I so clearly remember how my hand seemed so tiny in his. He was truly a giant of a man in many ways."

Post enjoyed boxing in his youth, and heavyweight champion Joe Louis – who trained in neighboring Pompton Lakes – visited him on occasion. Townsend recalled sitting on his bicycle in Post's driveway, hoping to catch a glimpse of the champ.

Post was also interested in raising pigeons and involved local youth in his hobby.
