Behind the Release: Duncan Sheik Confesses with “Covers 80s”
GARRISON, NY: When you think about it, a cover song is a love triangle of sorts unfolding before the listener.
There’s the original artist who first brought the tune into to the world; then there’s the influenced musician driven to pay tribute to their achievement; and finally there’s the song itself – the object of both of their deepest creative desires.
In this way, Duncan Sheik’s new collection being released Tuesday, June 7, Covers 80 Well, there’s this funny thing where if you’re a performer and a singer/songwriter, a lot of times you’ll be at a party and someone will hand you a guitar and say, “Play us a song we can sing along to.” After I played one Radiohead and one Oasis song, my repertoire was finished! So I started to put together a list of old songs that everyone knows, kind of a fake book. But I found it to be tiresome, and there were other people better than me at that. So I said, “Instead of covering the Stones and the Beatles , why not do ‘80’s English bands?” It would be my personal take on the artists who made me who I am as a songwriter. So I took a dozen or so bands and tried to identify one song that made sense for me to sing, and made an impact on me in some way. It was hard to put my finger on the genre, but there was an almost arty synth pop aesthetic to the bands that were informing me. That was the wheelhouse, with a couple of obvious exceptions, but at that time in my life — when I was 16 or 17 — they were part of a particular set of records that me and my friends were listening to. How did the idea for actually making this cover album, with its particular angle, come about from there? First of all, I’m generally more interested in making records than I am in performing. I’m happiest when I’m in the studio writing and/or recording music. I’ve started to enjoy performing more and more because I’ve done it more and more, but the heart of what I do is making records: If I’m going to go through the work of re-imagining these songs, then I was definitely going to record them. There was the question if they would see the light of day, but I left that in the capable hands of other people. Once I’d done the recording, it was asking my manager and the people at RED if they thought it was something they thought was worth putting out into the world, and they were very, very excited about it.

Finding tutorials and training courses for Ableton Live 7 is not an easy task. Most are so vague or move too slowly. This does both. First of all, I have recorded inside a few studios in L.A. and have never once seen anyone doing anything on a PC. This tutorial is a video that shows you an Ableton screen but with windows! Are you kidding me? At least make a Windows and a Mac version. It’s not like is cost ANYTHING to make. Second, the “dashboard” that you use to control the video functions is always floating around in front of the screen. It is extremely annoying after the first 30 seconds. Come on, just assign those functions to keys already. Third, the speed of the video is so that the pointer skips around and you can hardly follow it, even with the yellow circle around it. And where the pointer is and what she’s talking about doesn’t always match up. As well as the speed of the video, the speed of the narrator is out of control. She’s going so fast and I’m still trying to follow the pointer to find out what the hell she’s doing. There really is little to no explanation as to what really is going on at all. She just goes through the motions at turbo speed. If I already knew what every detail was about, would i really have bought an bundle of instructional dvd’s? It actually blows me away that they sell the dvd’s about other software. The highlight of the dvd is at the introduction where the narrator says: “these dvd’s have helped THOUSANDS of musicians all over the world!” All thousand of them? it would have been hilarious if she would have said hundreds or maybe 10. If you really hope to learn anything at all about Ableton Live 7 then skip this, it only makes it more complicated. I was particularly excited for the DJ section of the video and that was a total let down, too. It basically didn’t explain at all how everyone is DJing with the program. She just motor-mouths it through that one as well and it’s over. I rarely come across something this expensive and this useless. Like the title of my review says: “Hands Down The Worst Tutorial Ever.” Save your money and just slap yourself across the face.
