New B'klyn Bridge Park section opening
Brooklyn Bridge Park is expanding on Pier 6 just in time for Memorial Day weekend. The new section spanning 1.8 acres will include three regulation-size sand-volleyball courts, lighted pathways and two 15,000-square-foot swaths of lawns with native plants and trees. It will open Saturday morning, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corp. announced late Wednesday.
The pier, near where Atlantic Avenue ends, will also boast a plaza with an outdoor food court with tables, chairs and umbrellas. There will also be a renovated building clad with longleaf yellow pine salvaged from the park. It will house restrooms and possibly an eatery down the road.
The plaza will open with four food vendors: Milk Truck, which serves grilled cheese sandwiches and milkshakes; Bark, a Park Slope hot dog restaurant; organic ice cream purveyor Blue Marble Ice Cream; and Uncle Louie G's Italian Ices.
“Pier 6 now offers expanded amenities and recreational options for all types of park users,” said Regina Myer, president of Brooklyn Bridge Park Corp., the nonprofit charged with planning, building and maintaining the 85-acre waterfront park, in a statement. “We welcome four superb, Brooklyn-based concessionaires to the pier this summer and are thrilled that they will activate the newly-expanded space with a great array of refreshments for park visitors.”
Meanwhile, up at the north end of the 1.3 mile-long park, the four food vendors that were selected to operate at Pier 1 last year are slated to return. They are Blue Marble Ice Cream, Brooklyn Bridge Wine Bar, Calexico Carne Asada and Ditch Plains Drop-In. All are under a multi-year contract, as opposed to the Pier 6 vendors, who are signed on just for this season. The shorter term at Pier 6 is designed to give the park more time to evaluate future use of the pier, according to a Brooklyn Bridge Park Corp. spokeswoman. A portion of the revenue from the food vendors will go to maintaining and operating the park, she said, declining to specify details.
Originally, a restaurant was envisioned for the renovated building at Pier 6. A request for proposal was released in November for an operator to lease the 2,000-square-foot building with roughly 3,700 square feet of rooftop and outdoor space. In the end, the park received just one response and ruled against it.
“We believed it was not appropriate, so we decided not to move forward with it,” the spokeswoman said, declining to reveal the identity of the respondent. Next month, however, Bark will offer beer and wine on the building's roof deck.
