Horse-drawn activist draws wagonload of support in Amherst
Clad in a well-needed cowboy hat, jeans and denim, spitting chewing tobacco juice and just plain talking to anyone who walked up, Ralph Casey pulled his horse-drawn covered wagon message onto South Main Street in Amherst on Wednesday.
In a pedestrian way (letters on his wagon), he shouted out a message for small businesses that quickly and typically resonated among local town folk, perhaps complemented by but certainly not cemented through the digital-age reality.
The wagon, made in Canada , has capital letters on the orange-tan canvas cover that read: “Going to DC/To Get Answers For/ The Small Businessman .”
People flocked, because it was an “Oh my God” turn-your-car-around-level reaction . People stopped their vehicles to get a closer look. To a person, they grinned widely and eagerly greeted him , oblivious of 96-degree heat.
“It’s amazing, the people really are concerned with what’s going on,” said Casey , 69, a native of Dubois , Wyo. , he of sun-worn skin who runs a horseshoeing school in Villanow , Ga., in the far northwestern corner of the state near the Tennessee border.
After pulling through Lynchburg on Tuesday, he arrived in Amherst and stopped to eat at a restaurant Wednesday. Then, he continued northward on South Main Street/ U.S. 29 Business, passed the high school, labored uphill around a curve into the downtown at about 5 mph and stopped in the shade near the post office to give his brown Exmoor ponies, Lefty and Rightie, a break.
His gentle companion, a blue heeler cattle dog, Blue, sat at the front of the wagon, eager to kiss whomever would pet her, in front of the space where Casey and a former student driving the wagon, Melissa “Missy” Williams, 33, sleep.
Their presence resounded quickly.
On a breezeless sun-scorched Amherst sidewalk minutes after the pair stopped, a local businessman walked a half-block and gave Casey a neatly folded $20, thanked him and asked what supplies he needed.
Therein lies the typical reaction, Casey says; he has been stunned by how his message has resounded throughout the small-town Americana he has navigated since they set out May 30.
In one town, a police chief pulled him over and tried to give him a 100-pound box of food.
