Sand crabs look plentiful for summer surf fishing

As fly fishermen worked the surf line Saturday morning at Mission Beach, water woman extraordinaire and standup board fisher Michelle Woo Bowman noticed the mess of sand crabs that dot beaches right now.

“Some of the better fishing this morning has been over those crab beds,” Woo Bowman said.

Yes, the beaches are loaded with sand crabs, the favored bait of summer surf anglers. Fly fishermen who imitated them caught fish in the One Surf Fly Classic held on Mission Beach Saturday. Conventional-gear surf fishermen will do well this summer by gathering a bunch of them and using them on a small hook, light line (4- to 8-pound test with fluorocarbon leader) and a medium-action rod.

Chuck Neuneker and Glenn Harris reported very good surf fishing for corbina and spotfin corvina off Camp Pendleton. Permits required for this fishing, and it can be very good if the Marines aren’t conducting beach drills.

Past the surf, inshore and offshore fishing continue to show good signs. How about the weekend Capt. Mark Oronoz had on the Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth Sportfishing? He took a charter group to San Clemente Island for a 1½-day run that produced a handful of quality yellowtail to 20 pounds and a halibut to 30 pounds, along with limits of calico bass. On Sunday, he took a ¾-day charter down the Mexican coastline for 21 barracuda, limits of calico bass and 60 sand bass.

Yellowtail in the 30-pound range continue to show off La Jolla, and at least one slug white seabass was caught off La Jolla to indicate that fishery might be ready to break loose, too.

On the freshwater side, Barrett’s numbers dropped a bit, possibly due to the rainy day last week (Wednesday). Still, around 600 anglers have reported catching and releasing nearly 29,000 largemouth bass in nine days there. That’s roughly 48 bass per angler, so you know some caught a lot more, some less.

Night fishing continues at Lake Jennings, with fishing until midnight every Friday (5 p.m. opener) and Saturday (5:45 a.m. opener). Young Sam Cook, 8, La Mesa, reeled in his first fish ever, a 1-pound redear sunfish, at Jennings.

Santee Lakes has a night fishing event set for June 2 on Lakes 1-4. Big bass are stirring there, too, with a 12-pounder fooled by a crankbait reeled by Jerry Ferris at lake 3. Hong Veng used a plastic worm to trick a 7-pound, 7-ouncer on Lake 2.

Up at Big Bear Lake, a terrific nearby destination for Memorial Day, John Ley and Phil Silva hired Fish Big Bear Charter Services and reported catching and releasing over 100 trout in three days on separate four-hour trips. They trolled Needlefish, Thomas Buoyants and Rapalas for their fish.

And it is also important for you to check out beach every time, because beaches has tendency of changing and you may find that spots, where you were fishing few days ago are not suitable anymore! The best way to do beach research is from some high point, if it is possible – it is easier to pick up some new channels or holes with dark water in them. If you are going for pelagic fish, like salmon or tuna, always watch for seabirds behaviour. If birds started packing up and diving – it means that pelagic fish are pushing baits to the surface and birds are ready to catch their own prize!

One of the most effective fishing techniques, while fishing from the beach, among the rig fishing, is heavy lure casting. Heavy lures can be cast precisely into the gutters and holes while walking along the beach. This type of fishing allows you actively hunt for fish and not wait for the fish to come to your rig and grab the bait!

For lure casting you may use following new models of Shimano fishing reels(but this recommendations are not limiting you of using other fishing reels):

1. Stella SW saltwater spinning reels range. Casting lures allows you to cover more ground and helps you locating schooling predators. Also constant casting will improve your accuracy and precision.

Fishing from the rocks has its own tricks! One of the great techniques is to cast out the bait and let out the line to make it drifting. After fish picks it up allow the fish to take a bit of line to be sure that fish swallowed the bait before striking. Another successful way of fishing from the rocks is high speed spinning. You may use here Shimano fishing reel like Tyrnos with high gear ratios.

Shimano expands its Tyrnos line-up with the topless design single speed TYR8 and 10 and two-speed TYR8II and 10II, and for long-range action, the two-range TYR50IILRS with a low profile top crossbar. All compact in design this Shimano fishing reel is equipped with high spool to frame ratios – plus the 50IILRS features a smaller protruding gearbox – they have extremely fast gear ratios (6.0:1 on the TYR 8 and 10 and in high on 8II, 10II, 4.0:1 in high on the 50IILRS) to move lures and pick up slack line quickly.

You may greatly succeed with high speed spinning, but if you are about larger fish – live baiting is the way! And one of the best Shimano fishing reel for this purpose is reels Torium series. The lightweight Torium fishing reel is a star-drag saltwater reel, perfect for live bait or for bottom – fishing.
